Do I need to varnish glow paint at all?
Not always. A piece hanging on a wall indoors and rarely touched will be fine without one.Varnish earns its place on anything handled, cleaned, moved often, or made for a child'sroom - it takes the wear instead of your paint.
Which varnish should I choose for glow art?
It depends on where the piece will be seen.If it is mainly seen in the dark - a canvas, a prop, a sign - choose gloss. This is the right answer for most glow work. If you will also see it in daylight, choose matte. On a star ceiling or a bedroom mural, ashiny surface throws the room light back at you all day.High gloss is for a deep, wet-looking shine on resin art, skateboards and helmets. Satin is the middle option, for when gloss is too shiny and matte is too flat.If you are not sure, choose gloss.
Why 24 hours between coats? Most varnishes are faster.
Because the failure here is clouding, not tackiness. If moisture is still trapped in thecoat underneath, the next coat can dry hazy - and since this varnish cannot be removed,that haze cannot be fixed. Twenty-four hours is Liquitex's own instruction.
Will the varnish change my colours?
Yes, a little. Gloss and high gloss make colours look deeper and more solid, especiallydark ones. Satin changes them very little. Matte does the opposite - dark colours can lookflatter and slightly paler. If your piece has large dark areas, test a small patch beforeyou varnish all of it.
What kind of brush should I use?
A soft, wide, flat brush. Liquitex specifically say not to use rollers or sponge brushes -they trap air and leave a bubbly, hazy finish.
What conditions should I varnish in?
A normal, dry room. Avoid varnishing in a cold or very humid space - trapped moisture iswhat causes clouding, and this varnish cannot be removed if it goes wrong.
