What is the difference between an acrylic medium and an additive?
An acrylic medium contains binder - the material that holds paint together as it dries. It can change thickness, transparency or finish while maintaining the paint film. Additives change specific properties, such as flow, and need controlled amounts. They cannot replace a binder for loose pigment.
Should I choose a fluid medium or a gel medium?
Choose a fluid medium for easier spreading, thinner mixtures and layered effects. Choose a gel medium for more body, raised texture and visible brush or palette-knife marks.
What is the difference between matte and gloss mediums?
Matte mediums reduce shine, while gloss mediums increase it. Both can change the paint’s transparency as you add more. Choose according to the finish you want, and check a dried sample before using the mixture across your artwork.
Should I use Flow-Aid or Slow-Dri Medium?
Use Flow-Aid to improve flow and reduce brush marks. It is concentrated and must be diluted before adding it to paint or medium. Use Slow-Dri Medium when you want more time to blend and work with acrylic paint. Slow-Dri Medium and Slow-Dri Additive are different products, so follow the instructions on your bottle.
